東北の田舎生まれの亡くなった昭和一桁生まれの父が、姥捨山は本当にあったんだよ、と自身が親から先のご先祖から聞いてきた話をポツポツと呟くように教えてくれた。豪雪で畑作ができなくなり、娘を身売りしなければならなくなったご近所の話、子供を間引かざるを得なかった話等々。
だからというわけではないが、父は毎週「まんが日本昔ばなし」を楽しみにしていた。子供だった自分たちにも、見ることを奨めてきた。
「娯楽なんてなかったからな。今になって、こうして昔話を見ると昔の知らなかったこと、知りたかったことが分かるようになってな」と呟く父の横顔が、何年経っても忘れられない
